The American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps (ARCVLSC) was established in 1912 and the annual ocean marathon, sponsored by the Meninak Club of Jacksonville, has been ongoing since 1934. Each year active and retired members compete in the 3½ mile race that, owing to the prevailing currents, generally follow a route from south to north. Historically the race would begin in front of the life guard station, swim around the Jacksonville Beach pier and after rounding the Atlantic Beach pier arrive at the Atlantic Beach Hotel. Since 1989, long after the loss of the two piers and the hotel, the race has begun at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and finished at the life guard station.
